Kumi Yamashita. Building Blocks, 1997

There’s nothing better than her own words to describe the amazing and inspiring light and shadow art of Kumi Yamashita. Born in Japan in 1968, Kumi Yamashita is a fascinating artist working mainly on installation pieces that are constructed by using the most intriguing materials to trace figures that are challenging our perceptions of predictable relationships between solids and their shadows. I wish I could soon see an Exhibition of her art!

Dhiraj Singh, born in 1980, is an independent photographer based in Mumbai, India. A graphic designer by profession, he turned to photography to explore the world around him. He has been working professionally since mid 2007 and began by focusing on stories from India. His work has been published in Newsweek, Vanity Fair, Lens Blog, New York Times, Guardian, The Wall Street Journal, MSNBC, L’Espresso, Respekt, The Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times and others.

Singh documentary photography is a great testimony of Indian everyday life, with its beauties, traditions, contradictions and sufferings. “BNegative” and “Six Feet Under” shows the suffering of people affected by August 2008 Kosi River flood,  “Uncertain identity” documents the valley of Kashmir – object of an endless dispute between India and Pakistan – and its identity conflicts, while “26/11” is an astonishing reportage of November 26 attack in Mumbai.

Don’t ask how I hit on Clark Little‘s amazing photos. It happened during my regular surfing the web, in search of astonishing or curious stuff. And one day (or night) I run into Little’s wave photography.

Waves are fascinating, and Clark Little is a master in catching altogether the beauty, the power, the shapes and the lights. His photos show the nature in its slendour and mystery. I enjoyed reading on his website how it all began: “It all started in 2007 when Clark’s wife wanted a nice piece of art to decorate a wall. Voluntarily, Clark grabbed a camera, jumped in the water, and starting snapping away capturing the beauty and power of monstrous Hawaiian waves from the inside out. “Clark’s view” is a unique view of the ocean that most will only be able to experience safely on land, while studying one of Clark’s photos. Now with a camera upgrade, underwater housings and an itch to get that better shot, Clark has taken this on full-time and has moved his office from land, to the inside of a barrel. Since the recent stir of Clark’s work, his images have been run on the Today Show, ABC World News Now, Nature’s Best Photography, Paris Match (France), La Vie (France), Hana Hou (Hawaiian Airlines) magazine, Surfer magazine, Surfer’s Journal as well as multiple publishers and newspapers in the U.S. and overseas”.

There’s not much more words can express. Clark Little’s photos are speaking by themselves.

They are too often perceived as a threat but they are the ones endangered. Hunted, mutilated to take their fins, sharks have gone from predator to prey and failing protection they could easily reach extintion within a few years.

Driven by passion, filmmaker Rob Stewart realized “Sharkwater“, a stunning high definition video exploring sharks in all their beauty and pointing at the exploitation and chase that might soon lead to extintion of these incredible creatures.

There are wonders that naked eye is unable to catch: forms, colors, compositions . Hidden mysteries only visible through light microscope and revealed in marvelous photographies.

A fantastic gallery of gorgeous images showing the beauty of life and its complexity can be enjoyed thanks to Nikon’s Small World Competition, launched in 1974 “as a means to recognize and applaud the efforts of those involved with photography through the light microscope”. These pictures are not only an object of beauty, they are also a “technical document that can be of great significance to science or industry”.

Nikon Small World website provides a showcase of the best images submitted for the competition since 1997. Additionally, the best pictures can be admired at Small World Exhibit, travelling throughout USA and Canada at selected museums and science centers. The Invisible Empire

“Established in 1866, the Ku Klux Klan still remains one of America’s most secretive organizations. New York photojournalist Anthony Karen first transcended that secrecy several years ago when he got the opportunity to photograph a KKK cross-lighting ceremony; since then, he has been documenting Klan organizations throughout the country. Those photographs are compiled to form an absorbing document of one of the most notorious groups in history in The Invisible Empire: Ku Klux Klan“.

A great book and an incredible testimony on one of the most famous hidden and occult groups, published by Powerhouse Books.

For 36 weeks, a sketchbook – named book – was sent in random order between four artists: two in Brooklin, two in Belfast.

Every Wednesday, one participant would receive book. The following Monday it was sent out, giving each artist five days to complete a spread in response to the one that preceded it.

A small portion of each entry extends on to the following page. Beyond this, there was no communication between the artists concerning the content of book during its making.

Book‘s first trip across the Atlantic was on June 2, 2003. Its final trip was on February 2, 2004. By the time it was completed, book had travelled over sixty thousand miles.
